Tony Horton... God Love Him

As I recounted in a previous post (My Story... and I do have one), I used to weigh 280lbs and had a 46 inch waist at my heaviest, March 2004. The birth of my daughter gave me the motivation to lose 115lbs and 15 inches off my waist in less than seven months. This weight loss was accomplished through diet alone. The result was I weighed less, but was not necessarily that much healthier overall.

I decided to add exericse to my plan in July, 2005. As someone who detests running (I am only going to run if someone is chasing me) I chose to begin lifting weights. Weightlifting is one of the smartest things you can do to lose and maintain fat loss because muscle is a very metabolically active tissue - meaning it burns many calories per day to maintain muscle and burns even more calories to build more muscle. So our muscle mass is the greatest single control we have over our own metabolic rate i.e. the number of calories we burn per day.

I began weightlifting by building my own plan of lifts that I got off the internet. The results were fair - a decent start for a "newbie" (as I had NEVER lifted before) but nothing to write home about. After doing more research I began doing routines from books written by some of the most respected personal trainers in the business. These were better than my "homemade" plan but still did not give me the results I was looking for. I was not looking to have a body like the "Governator" but did want to look healthy and defined with my shirt off. (The old saying is dieting makes you look good with your clothes on, exercise makes you look good with your clothes off.) And lifting 30 minutes, 3 days a week was simply not giving me that look.

I believe everything in life happens for a reason and everything happens to prepare you for the next step. God has directed me down several roads in my life - some fun, some not so fun - but all preparing me for a journey I was yet to begin. What I did in those early months/years weightlifting and fitness-wise was preparing me to succeed at the program that finally let me attain many of the goals I had set for myself back in July, 2005. On December 24, 2008 I began a program that once again changed my life - that program is called P90X.

P90X was developed by fitness personal trainer Tony Horton. Tony has been well known for many years - training many of hollywood's elite. He is the developer of the beachbody program "Power 90", a 90-day routine that has assisted thousands across the country and around the world to improve their health and fitness levels. Power 90 Extreme, or P90X, is the step up in intensity from the Power 90 program. I found P90X through one of the infomercials on TV. I became intrigued with the program and thought it would be perfect to do while on our two-week Christmas trip to Canada, as I would not have access to a gym or weights while at my wife's parent's house. P90X can be done using resistance bands and that I could pack in my suitcase. On Christmas eve, I woke at 7:00am and popped in a routine Tony calls "Chest and Back."

The first thing I noticed about Tony was how much I enjoyed his humor and coaching. I found, and still do find it hard not to get a grin on my face while listening to him during the workouts. The next thing I noticed is that these routines are not something that will be mastered after the first time or two going through them. Unlike many other DVD's, these would be an on-going challenge, which is great. Your body will only change if it is constantly being challenged.

Tony's philosophy of fitness is something he has termed "muscle confusion." The concept is that if you continually do the same routine over and over, your body will adapt to what you are doing and will plateau (cease changing) rather quickly. By changing things up on a regular basis you prevent muscle adaptation, allowing on-going changes to your physique. P90X consists of 12 different routines so variety is an important element.

Not just a muscle building program, Tony has included a Yoga program and also a stretch routine. He often says that flexibility is the key to the fountain of youth. I agree with this. I have seen from the patients who enter my practice, once you lose your mobility your health goes downhill rather quickly. Also included are several cardio routines ranging from Kenpo martial arts to plyometrics, which burn tons of calories in a very short period of time.

I completed my first 90 day round of P90X on March 24, 2009. If you look over in the right-hand column under the P90X tab, you will see a slideshow of pictures showing my changes in the 90 short days. They still blow my mind when I view them. I am now into my second round of the program and am even more enthusiastic about it now than I was when I began... if that is possible.

Tony Horton has been and continues to be an integral part in changing my health and my life. If you are interested in experiencing the same type of life-changing program, click on the P90X link on the right to learn more about this exciting program and the other programs available through Beachbody. If you have not been exercising at all, Power 90 would be a great place to start with a look to graduating to the P90X program afterwards.

As Tony says; Do Your Best, and Forget the Rest!

BRING IT!
